DESTINATION PENTECOST
|
The origin of Pentecost (or Whitsunday) is to be found in the law of Sinai given to the people of Israel. On the fiftieth day after Pesach (Passover) new sacrifices have to be presented to God. The celebration is also called the “festival of weeks” where people come together and no work may be done.
In Christian times the festival of weeks was renamed “Pentecost” after the Greek word “Pentekostos” (fiftieth). The Pentecost holiday celebrates the coming of the holy spirit to the disciples.
Spring celebrations are an ancient tradition – already in the Middle Ages they existed and had their roots in ancient Germanic, Celtic and other old European traditions. One of the festivities was the celebration of the “pinkster” flower (not the modern one we buy now but cow parsley) where the most beautiful girl of the village was chosen as this year’s most precious flower.
We think it is only right that given these ancient multicultural roots that Pinkster has its rightful place in the tournament’s 20th edition.
Since you dare not work during this time, you are invited to come and play tennis. With some help from above we hope to have a festive tournament in pleasant sunny weather – and we are still debating in which way we will celebrate the most beautiful girl (or boy) of the tournament.
And so it is: Destination Pentecost. |
